FARMINGTON — The FBI and the Shiprock office of the Navajo Police Department have launched a joint investigation into a fatal car crash that occurred earlier this month.

FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said a vehicle occupied by three people crashed into a tree in the late morning of Aug. 2 on Second Lane North in Shiprock. The FBI and Shiprock police are investigating whether alcohol was involved in the crash and are trying to determine who was the driver of the vehicle.

Anthony James Allen, 28 of Shiprock, was killed in the crash. According to his obituary, he enlisted with the U.S. Marine Corps after graduating from high school and served two combat tours in Iraq. He was attending a local community college before his death and loved the outdoors. He is survived by his parents, Johnny and Elsie Allen; his brothers, Jovanni Allen and Christopher Allen; and his son, Amalikai Allen.

Jovanni Allen said he hopes his brother's death will bring awareness to the damage caused by drinking and driving.

Fisher declined to provide information on the two other people involved in the crash, saying that the investigation is ongoing.
