FARMINGTON — A 21-year-old Farmington man was arrested on Aug. 4 on suspicion of possessing a firearm after police were called to his home on a reported domestic disturbance.
Aaron Montoya was charged with child abuse and battery against a household member at an initial appearance on Aug. 5. Judge Mark Steven Hawkinson determined at the appearance there was probable cause Montoya committed battery, but not child abuse. The child abuse charge was dismissed.
According to a press release from the Farmington Police Department, officers were dispatched at noon to a residence in the 2900 block of La Palma Place after receiving reports of a domestic disturbance. Montoya had left the scene before police arrived and was reportedly armed with a firearm, the release states.
Officers established a perimeter and called in the department's K9 unit to search the area. Montoya was eventually found hiding in a wooded area on the west side of the city at 2 p.m.
Montoya was armed, the release states, but he was taken into custody without incident.
Montoya is being held at the San Juan County Detention Center on a $13,100 bond, according to the release.
