The teenagers allegedly used a small gun to shoot at two children racing in the street. San Juan County Sheriff's Office Mitch Goins said the gun could have been an air soft gun.
"We don't know if it was a real gun or an air soft gun at this point," Goins said, adding that no shells were found at the two scenes where the children were shot at.
Police were initially dispatched to the scene on what was reported as a drive-by shooting, according to police dispatch.
A 7-year-old boy says he was riding his bike when what he described as a bullet from a BB gun hit his bike chain, causing him to crash in a nearby ditch. His 12-year-old friend helped him up.
The boys — whose parents asked that their names not be used for fear for retalition — said they have had problems in the past with the teenager driver they say shot at the boys.
"I hope he gets charged with something," said Juana Damian, one of the boy's mothers.
The incident was reported to police just before 8 p.m. The car was described as a four-door, extra-long, maroon GMC Yukon with tinted windows and turquoise New Mexico plates.
