AZTEC — The fatal shooting of a couple outside their Aztec home appears to be a murder-suicide, an official with the San Juan County Sheriff's Office said Monday evening as investigators continued the process of collecting and analyzing evidence from the scene.
Deputies were dispatched at 1:03 p.m. to a residence at 21 County Road 3133 after receiving reports of two individuals dead of suspected gunshot wounds. Lt. Detective Cory Tanner said the bodies were spotted outside the home by a county employee driving past the residence.
One of the two victims has been identified as Erika Brown, 24. He said the identity of the second victim, a man in his 50s, will be released after next of kin is notified. He said that Brown and the man were a couple, but a motive for the shooting has not been determined.
An unidentified neighbor at the scene told The Daily Times that he heard what sounded like three or four gunshots Sunday afternoon. Tanner confirmed that other neighbors reported hearing gunshots during the same time frame.
"That is when we presume it went down," he said.
Tanner said that a gun was recovered from the scene and both bodies will be autopsied.
County Road 3133 was closed to traffic most of the evening.
