Farmington police officers were dispatched to 713 Mesa Vista Drive after receiving reports that a naked man, later identified as Rick Kennedy, was pointing a rifle at neighbors, according to a press release from the Farmington Police Department.
A neighbor told investigators Kennedy exited his house naked and called her a rude name, according to the release. He then sat cross-legged under a tree and began tracking her movements with a rifle.
Kennedy retreated into his house when police arrived. The nature of the call prompted the officers to call in additional support from the Farmington Police Department and the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.
The Farmington Police Department's SWAT team was dispatched at 9 a.m., and the officers made contact with Kennedy by phone. Kennedy and his 15-year-old son surrendered without incident shortly after. The boy, whose name was not released, was released into his mother's custody, the release states.
“He wouldn't come out for 20 minutes,” said neighbor Rob Wood. “Then he came out, hands up, and the kid followed.”
Wood said his wife was getting ready to leave for work when she was waved back into the house by officers at the scene.
Kennedy was booked into San Juan County Detention Center on two counts of child abuse, three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct and negligent carrying of a deadly weapon.
