FARMINGTON — Earlier this week, Arcemio Charleston was driving through Shiprock when he saw two churches with the words "Impact Shiprock" on their marquees.
To him, that was a signal the community was embracing a free event he helped organize.
"All these churches are sharing the same message," he said.
Impact Shiprock will take place on July 26 and 27. It was organized by the Shiprock Area Ministers Association.
Charleston, who is part of the association, said the event brings together Christian churches to foster discussions on what the faith community can do to help the needy in Shiprock.
Often, he said, the area depends on outside groups to help those in need.
"Why doesn't Shiprock reach out to Shiprock?" he said.
He said Impact Shiprock helps local Christians reach out to others in the community.
"I think for me and pretty much everybody, it's to be able to love on neighbors," he said.
He said donations taken during the Sunday service will help the community pantry.
"The whole Gospel message is that Christ sacrificed himself," he said. "He gave himself to all of the world."
Churches individually find ways to help people, but Impact Shiprock is different because "it's basically churches working together," Charleston said.
Nancy Hall, a member of Shiprock Area Ministers Association and wife of Dineh Christian Center's pastor Freddy Hall, said the event will also help unify the Christian community.
"We just wanted to show the community that the churches are united and we all have the same goal of getting people saved," Hall said.
SAMA also hosts events like Easter sunrise services and spring "singspirations," which Hall said usually attract 75 to 120 people to the host church's facility.
She said the ministers expect Impact Shiprock to be much larger.
The free event features live music by local bands, a family fun walk, field day events and a bouncy house for small children on Saturday, as well as a Sunday morning community service.
The event is open to people from all communities in the Four Corners area.
"We need people to know that Christianity is not for a single group," she said.
