FARMINGTON — The Farmington Police Department SWAT team surrounded an apartment on North Monterrey Avenue at about 4:54 p.m. on Monday to arrest a Farmington man accused of shooting from a motor vehicle, according to a department press release.

Mark Hansen, 52, ultimately was arrested on a felony charge of shooting at or from a motor vehicle; a misdemeanor charge of using a telephone to threaten, intimidate or harass; and charges of negligent use of a firearm and disorderly conduct, according to the press release,

Police decided to use the SWAT team because of the violent nature of his alleged offenses and because of the suspect's recent unusual behavior.

After surrounding the residence police attempted to make contact with Hansen. Using a police vehicle's public address system, the officers commanded Hansen multiple times to come out of his apartment, according to the press release.

Hansen refused to leave and the police decided to break a bedroom window in order deploy a robot that would help them locate Hansen and increase the likelihood of a safe resolution to the incident, according to the press release.

When the window was broken, officers saw Hansen and ordered him to surrender, but he fled from the officer's view. The officers then breached the apartment's front door, according to the press release.

Once inside, officers told him to show his hands and get down on the ground, which he refused to do. He reportedly reached into his pockets. Members of the SWAT team managed to get him down on the ground and handcuffed him.

A search warrant obtained for his apartment recovered the weapon he had allegedly used to commit the crime. The firearm was found in the crawl space, according to the press release.

Hansen has also been charged with resisting or obstructing a police officer.
