FARMINGTON — A Shiprock man has pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual abuse of a Navajo child under the age of 12.
Gilbert Yazzie, 45, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, admitted during Thursday's plea hearing in Albuquerque to engaging in a sexual act with the victim on June 15, 2013, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
According to the press release, the terms of his plea agreement include eight years in federal prison followed by a supervised release to be determined by the court. He must also register as a sex offender.
Yazzie has been in federal custody since his arrest in June 2013. He will remain there until his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled.
