FARMINGTON — A Waterflow man was arrested for allegedly abusing his girlfriend's child while babysitting on Wednesday.
Fred Blueeyes, 23, was watching the 2-year-old boy while his girlfriend, the child's mother, was at work, according to a press release from the San Juan County Sheriff's Office.
Sheriff's office deputies and emergency medical service personnel were dispatched to the residence near milepost 33 on U.S. Highway 64. Blueeyes originally reported the child fell off a couch while he was in a different room, but a medical evaluation revealed the boy's head injury was inconsistent with Blueeyes' story, according to the press release.
In later interviews, Blueeyes told detectives he was cleaning the house and found the child in the kitchen making a mess. He allegedly shoved the boy's head backward, causing it to strike the corner of a cabinet. The child began to cry and couldn't catch his breath, police say, and Blueeyes picked him up and allegedly shook him and yelled at him to stop crying, according to the press release.
When he put the child down, the boy went limp and fell to the floor unconscious, according to the press release.
The child was flown to Albuquerque for advanced treatment for severe head trauma. Blueeyes is being held at the San Juan County Detention Center on a $75,000 bond.
