FARMINGTON — Republican Connie Johnston won a tight primary victory over Gary McDaniel in the race for the Division 1 Magistrate Judge seat and Rena Scott won the Republican Division 2 Magistrate Judge spot during Tuesday's primary elections.

Johnston won with 550 votes to McDaniel's 513 votes, according to final results.

Johnston said she was thankful for her family, friends and supporters for helping her win the primary.

"It makes me feel really good because I have busted my rear since January and I haven't let up," Johnston said.

Johnston will likely take the seat because she faces no Democratic challenger in November's general election.

"I'm really happy we don't have to do it again in the fall," Johnston said.

Seven candidates were in the Republican Party primary race for the San Juan County Magistrate Judge Division 1 seat.

Johnston and McDaniel along with Jonny Brown, Stacey Biel, Mike Fauteaux, Patrick Otero and Brent Byrum were vying for the Republican spot on the November general election ballot.

Of the six San Juan County Magistrate Judge divisions on the primary ballot, only Division 1 and 2 were contested and they were both Republican races.

Rena Scott with 307 votes beat George Waybenais III's 198 votes for the Magistrate Judge Division 2 Republican primary according to unofficial results from 33 of the 34 polling locations.

Scott said winning the primary was outstanding and she would have not been able to do it without her supporters.

"My dreams are coming true, this is what I wanted," Scott said.

Scott lost in the March election for the Farmington Municipal Judge position to incumbent Bill Liese and she said she turned around and immediately started working on the magistrate judge Republican primary.

Scott will face off against Democratic candidate Matthew Tso for the Division 2 judge position in the November general election.

In the Division 4 race, Democrat Trudy Chase will face Republican Melvin Sam.

Three of the Magistrate Judge's races had candidates who ran unopposed in Tuesday's primary election and will run unopposed in the November general election.

Those candidates are Republican Mark Steven Hawkinson in Division 3, Republican James Mosberger in Division 5 and Republican Barry Sharer in Division 6.
