FARMINGTON — Life can be a party, and if you need party supplies and decorations, a business that opened earlier this month may be able help.
Celebrations Party Store and More, 419 E. Broadway Ave. opened their doors on May 3 with a business model that included saving people a long drive to Albuquerque for party supplies.
"I opened the store because there was not that much of a selection (for party supplies) here in Farmington," said Tammy Simpson, who owns the store with her husband, Rocky.
She added that she is primary manager of the store with seven part-time employees while her husband works a different job.
She opened the store with limited advertising but did have a drawing for a barbecue set valued at more than $500 dollars. Since then, she says she has catered to customers seeking mostly graduation party decorations.
But Simpson is confident that as people find out about her business more will venture in to find items to meet their party needs.
"Everybody has a birthday," she said.
The building covers nearly 5,000 square feet and holds everything from mustache party favors to foil balloons with popular children's movies and themes.
Simpson's store is the second on Broadway Avenue to celebrate an opening this month.
Custom Creations and Unique Gifts celebrated their opening last week. Owner Deb Walker said one of the reasons she had appointment only hours on Sunday was because of limited traffic on Broadway Avenue on the weekends.
Audra Winters, Farmington Chamber of Commerce CEO, said the weekend traffic on Broadway Avenue should pick up.
"The more businesses we get downtown, the more traffic we will get," she said in an interview last week.
Simpson said she and her husband had three possible places to locate but chose Broadway Avenue because of the traffic.
In the fall of 2013, the Farmington Metropolitan Planning Organization stated that the traffic count at a nearby crossing near Scott Avenue averaged about 20,200 cars per day.
"I think we're in a great location due to the high volume of traffic that comes through," she said.
Shawnna Johnson, 39, of Kirtland said she noticed the store while she was driving by one day.
She was shopping for graduation party decorations there on Thursday.
"It's pretty awesome," she said.
But the other reason she was shopping at Celebrations Party Store was because it saved her a drive to Albuquerque. Johnson said in the past, her family would make special trips to Albuquerque for party supplies.
"I don't want to drive to Albuquerque," she said.
