FARMINGTON — Two San Juan County high schools hosted the first of a series of graduation ceremonies Saturday.

Commencement ceremonies celebrated graduating seniors from Aztec's alternative high school, Vista Nueva High School, and from Navajo Preparatory School in Farmington.

In the Aztec High School multi-purpose room, 15 Vista Nueva seniors received their diplomas.

According to an advance program, three students — Melodie Shafstall, Brandi Johnson and Matthew Lucero — were scheduled to speak during the ceremony.

At the McGee Park Convention Center, 52 seniors from Navajo Prep also graduated on Saturday.

The commencement speaker was Stan Atcitty, a principal member of technical staff at Sandia National Laboratories. Atcitty was awarded the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers in 2012.

Valedictorian Sarena M. Gray and Salutatorian RaineeSommer Yazzie were both scheduled to address their class, according to advance copies of the programs.
