FARMINGTON >> The Piedra Vista athletic department announced its new girls soccer head coach last week.

Adam Huff will take over the program for the 2014 season.

"We found somebody who fits in and knows the students," PV athletic director Kelly Thur said. "Most of high school athletics is about teaching and motivating the students, and he's shown he can do that."

Huff, who also serves as the head coach of the boys basketball team at PV, said he's looking forward to the challenge of competing against the district opponents in the fall.

"It will be tough. Aztec has played in the last two state title games. Farmington has made the semis. Even Miyamura is making the playoffs each year," he said.

This will be Huff's first soccer coaching job. He previously played for Kirtland Central in high school and helped the Broncos to a second-place finish in 2002.

"I started when I was 5 and played all through high school," he said. "I've always been a fan — watching and going to games."

Huff said players and parents have had a positive response to him becoming coach.

"The parents and players I've talked to seem pretty excited. It gives me a nice reassurance," he said.

Huff said when he played, the team was defense-oriented, and he plans to have the Lady Panthers play in a similar fashion, while using the team's speed on the counterattack to provide a scoring punch.

There will be a week of overlap between state soccer and the beginning of the basketball season, but Huff said he has planned for that and doesn't foresee it being an issue with either job.

"I'll just have to adjust some tryout times that week," he said. "I have some good assistants on the basketball court and trust them to run things."

Last season, PV finished 10-12 and earned the No. 11 seed in the state playoffs.

The Lady Panthers upset No. 6 Los Alamos 2-1 in the first round before losing to No. 3 Aztec 1-0 in the quarterfinals.
