Around 3:30 p.m., San Juan County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a shooting at 18 County Road 3452.
Deputies found a man inside the house who had been shot, said Beth Utley, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office.
Sgt. Dave Pixton said bullet casings were found in the middle of the dirt road.
He said witnesses told deputies a man fled on foot from the home, heading north or northwest.
The shooting victim was shot outside the home and then went inside, where deputies found him, Pixton said. The victim, whose name has not been released, was transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center, Pixton said.
His condition is unknown, Pixton said.
The suspect was described as a 5-foot-5-inch Hispanic male with a medium build who was wearing dark jeans and a white T-shirt, according to police dispatchers.
While deputies were searching, dispatch received two calls from residents reporting sightings of the suspect, which helped lead to the suspect’s arrest.
A resident in the area called police when she spotted someone matching the suspect's description crossing her property, Pixton said.
The sheriff's office helicopter was deployed, and deputies located the suspect at a home at 24 County Road 3560, according to police scanner traffic.
Utley said the suspect surrendered, and no one else was injured.
The man's name was not released, as of 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Roads in the area were briefly shut down, but they reopened shortly after 4 p.m., following the suspect's arrest. A short portion of County Road 3452 remained closed to preserve evidence, which included the suspect's footprints.
School bus transportation was halted to the area until roads reopened.
“I'm just glad that when it happened the kids hadn't been released from school yet,” Utley said.
