FARMINGTON — An 18-year-old Farmington man was arrested Wednesday evening after a road rage incident that started at Piedra Vista High School led to a drive-by shooting at 30th Street and Butler Avenue, police said.

Jonathan Alexander faces one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and three counts of child abuse, Farmington police Lt. Taft Tracy said. The child abuse charges were filed because children were inside the victim's car, Tracy said.

The investigation is ongoing, and Alexander may face additional charges, Tracy said.

No one was injured in the shooting.

The incident began at Piedra Vista High School when two cars nearly collided in the parking lot, according to a press release from the Farmington Police Department.

Alexander, who was driving a red passenger car, followed the other vehicle from the high school. The driver of that car had her three children inside the vehicle, according to police.

Alexander followed the woman as she drove west on Piñon Hills Boulevard and turned south on Butler Avenue.

At about 8:20 p.m., the woman called police and reported that at Butler Avenue and 30th Street she saw something long sticking out of the Alexander's car window and then heard a gunshot, according to the press release.

The woman pulled off the street to report the shooting. She also supplied police with a description of the car and a license plate number.

Officers located the car Alexander was driving at a home on North Buena Vista Avenue at about 9 p.m. Wednesday. Alexander was among the people police ordered out of the home.

Tracy said on Thursday that Alexander had a firearm. Because the case is under investigation, he said he could not confirm what type of weapon was used.

He also couldn't confirm if anyone else was in the car with Alexander at the time of the shooting.
