FARMINGTON — A Shiprock resident pleaded guilty to second-degree murder Tuesday morning.
Alvert Miller, 39, was sentenced to six years in federal prison for killing a 53-year-old man while driving under the influence of alcohol in April 2013, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.
Miller lost control of his truck and caused a rollover collision on U.S. Highway 491 near Littlewater. The passenger in his truck was ejected from the vehicle and died upon impact as a result of blunt force trauma to the face and head, according to the press release.
Miller has been in federal custody for a year and remains detained pending a sentencing hearing, which has not yet been scheduled.
In a plea agreement, Miller acknowledged based on his prior DWI convictions that he knew driving under the influence put other lives in danger, according to the press release.
