AZTEC — Starting this week and continuing through summer, drivers along U.S. Highways 516 and 550 east of Aztec can expect delays.

A road improvement project started on Monday along stretches of the highways.

The New Mexico Department of Transportation began road construction between mileposts 7.4 and 13.9 on Highway 516 and between mileposts 159.9 and 161.2 on Highway 550.

The road construction, which will occur on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., will cause intermittent lane closures.

Workers with general contractor H.O. Construction Inc. of Albuquerque will install ramps, new sidewalks, curbs, gutters and median paving.

The work is expected to be completed this summer. The $701,492 safety project is funded by the transportation department.
