Farmington — The Navajo Nation Council will meet in a special session at 10 a.m. on Friday at the council chamber in Window Rock, Ariz.

The only item listed on the proposed agenda is legislation to remove Speaker Johnny Naize as leader of the 24-member council.

The bill was proposed after the tribe's special prosecutor filed conspiracy and bribery charges against Naize and after he was named as a co-conspirator in the complaint against a former delegate in connection to abusing the council's discretionary fund.

If removed, Naize would continue to serve as delegate for Blue Gap-Tachee, Cottonwood-Tselani, Low Mountain, Many Farms and Nazlini chapters in Arizona.

On March 27, the Naa'bik'íyáti' Committee recommended the council pass the bill, with a vote of 10 in favor and one opposed.

This is the second attempt to remove Naize as speaker.

The first legislation did not receive the 16 votes needed to pass during the winter session in January.
