FARMINGTON — Central Consolidated School District's board of education will recognize one of the district's principals for winning a national award during the joint work session and regular school board meeting today.

Donald Hornbecker is the principal of Kirtland Elementary School and was selected the New Mexico 2013 National Distinguished Principal by the New Mexico Association of Elementary School Principals.

Every year the National Association of Elementary School Principals recognizes elementary and middle school principals who set high standards for instruction, student achievement, and character.

The winners are selected by the association's state affiliates.

Hornbecker has been the principal of Kirtland Elementary since 1986. He spent three years as principal at the former Nataani Nez Elementary in Shiprock prior to working at Kirtland.

The work session and regular school board meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. today at the district's Shiprock board room in Shiprock.

In January, board members voted to combine the February work session with the regular school board meeting.

The meetings were combined so that board members could attend the New Mexico School Boards Association's Board Institute conference last week in Santa Fe.
