The Garden City Group -- claims administrator for the Cobell Settlement -- has recently learned that individuals claiming to be associated with the Cobell Settlement have contacted one or more those expecting to receive money and attempted to obtain bank account information.
The settlement is from the 1996 class-action lawsuit that uncovered years of neglect by the federal government when it came to keeping accurate records of Indian trust accounts. The case was settled for about $3.4 billion.
The Garden City Group advises class members that these individuals are not acting on behalf of the Cobell Settlement.
No one associated with the Cobell Settlement will ever request class members to provide information regarding their personal bank accounts, officials said in a press release.
The Garden City Group advises people to exercise caution when releasing bank account numbers to others.
If you received a call requesting such information or if you are concerned about a call you receive, please write down the telephone number and contact the Garden City Group at 1-800-961-6109 or class attorneys David Smith and Bill Dorris at 1-866-383-6554.
