FARMINGTON — Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly signed a bill to amend the Navajo Nation Veterans Trust Fund into law Friday.
"Today, we recognize the needs of our warriors, our veterans on the Navajo Nation," Shelly said in a press release from his office.
The legislation amends the allocation to the trust fund to equally split between the trust fund and the Department of Navajo Veterans Affairs.
The veterans department will use its percentage to build at least 15 homes and provide minor housing repairs for veterans in the five agencies.
"We have to take care of our veterans. They risked their lives for our freedom and to defend our people," Shelly said.
Navajo Nation Council Speaker Johnny Naize and delegates Alton Joe Sheperd, Jonathan Hale and Danny Simpson were present during the signing ceremony Friday.
