BLOOMFIELD — A man was killed Friday evening when his car collided with a semi-truck near the intersection of U.S. Highway 550 and County Road 5500 in Bloomfield.
The man’s identity has not been released.
Investigators are still working to reconstruct the crash, which occurred at about 6:30 p.m., said San Juan County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Al Jamison.
Witness statements indicate that both the semi and a white passenger car were heading north on Highway 550, Jamison said. The semi turned east onto a small road, and the passenger car smashed into the back of the semi, he said.
Police have not found evidence that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Jamison said an autopsy will be needed to confirm that.
The semi-truck driver was not injured.
As of 9 p.m., Highway 550 was reduced to single lanes in both directions near the scene of the crash.
Two people in a nearby car witnessed the wreck and tried to help the victim, but “it was not working,” Jamison said.
He said that it appears that the victim was wearing a seat belt, but it may have failed.
