AZTEC — A man was arrested Friday night after he allegedly led police on a high-speed chase that reached speeds of 125 mph while he was driving drunk.
Jayson Waggoner, a 31-year-old Kirtland man, was arrested for suspicion of aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, aggravated driving while intoxicated, an open container violation and other traffic offenses in connection to the incident.
San Juan County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Beth Utley said Wagoner was pulled over by a Farmington police officer at about 9 p.m. on Friday near Monterey Avenue and Murray Drive. She said Waggoner fled the police officer and deputies were notified.
A deputy in the sheriff's office helicopter spotted Waggoner driving a Honda Civic near Bloomfield Highway and Browning Parkway shortly after.
The helicopter followed the Civic as it traveled east on U.S. Highway 64 faster than 125 mph between Andrea Drive and County Road 350, Tactical Flight Officer Gary Mauldin said in a prepared statement.
The Civic then slowed and started moving at the pace of traffic and deputies in patrol cars attempted to stop the vehicle.
"The vehicle continued east bound with disregard for the lights and siren," Deputy Nicholas Adegaite, who followed the vehicle, said in a prepared statement. "I cycled my sirens multiple times in order to get the attention of the vehicle but was unsuccessful."
The Civic then entered Bloomfield city limits and accelerated to 85 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to the sheriff's office,
Deputies deployed stop sticks -- which puncture tires -- near the Lone Star Truck Stop on U.S. 64.
After the vehicle was damaged by the stop sticks, it slowed and eventually turned onto a dirt road on the north side of the highway near Newby Lane.
Deputies arrested Waggoner and said there was an open, 16-ounce can of Budwesier in the car, Utley said.
She said deputies took a sample of Waggoner's blood and are waiting for blood-alcohol-concentration results, Utley said.Ryan Boetel covers crime for The Daily Times. He can be reached at 505-564-4644 and firstname.lastname@example.org. Follow him on Twitter @rboetel on Twitter.
