Farmington — John D. Cronise picked up the guitar when he was 13, and that moment changed his life.
"Musicians start bands," Cronise said, explaining why 10 years ago he formed The Sword, a heavy metal band from Austin, Texas. "If I knew why I did it, I would be a psychologist."
On July 30, The Sword will perform at Top Deck in Farmington.
Cronise said he has always had a need to make music.
"Musicians are people who just have an innate need to make noise -- to write songs," Cronise said.
Cronise described the songs he writes as being influenced by 1970s rock and 1980s heavy metal.
"They're all expressions of mine," he said.
While The Sword has performed in New Mexico before, this will be their first time playing in Farmington. Cronise said they are excited about the show.
"It's always interesting to play in new places," Cronise said.
Despite having released four albums and having been compared to heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath by Rolling Stone magazine, Cronise said he doesn't think the band has broken through yet.
While the music supports the four band members, they live modestly and tour in a van, rather than a large tour bus.
"We're still a small band," Cronise said.
