FARMINGTON — U.S. Highway 491 will be closed in both directions for two weeks between Sheep Springs and Naschitti after heavy rain on July 5 caused the highway to collapse.

Motorists are urged to detour to U.S. Highway 371 for travel to the Four Corners area, and Navajo Route 12 from Sheep Springs for travel to Window Rock, according to a press release from the New Mexico Department of Transportation.

Crews are repairing the damaged road by mile marker 44 and are developing a detour route.

Emergency traffic will be directed by the Crownpoint Police Department south of mile marker 44 and by the Shiprock Police Department north of the marker, according to a Shiprock Police Department press release.

Call the Shiprock Police Department at 505-368-1350 or 505-368-1351, or the Crownpoint Police Department at 505-786-2050 or 505-786-2051 for more information.
