FLORA VISTA — Two people were injured in a freak accident Sunday afternoon when two vehicles crashed and ended up in a ditch.

San Juan County Sheriff's officers were dispatched at 2:41 p.m. to the accident scene east of New Mexico State Road 516 and County Road 350 intersection.

A mother and daughter, who were in a red vehicle, sustained minor injuries and were transported to San Juan Regional Medical Center.

Sgt. Garrett Morris of the Sheriff's Office said the silver vehicle heading west toward Farmington lost its driver-side rear tire, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

After crossing the median and spinning around, a red vehicle heading east drove into the back of the silver vehicle, causing both vehicles to crash into a road-side ditch.

"It's a basically a freak accident with the wheel falling off, causing them to go into the other lanes," Morris said. "I'm glad no one got hurt worse than they did."

Both occupants of the red vehicle were checked at the scene by paramedics and were released.

Eastbound traffic on NM 516 was restricted to one lane following the collision as the scene was investigated and both vehicles were towed out of the ditch.

The case is under investigation by the Sheriff's Office.
