FARMINGTON — A Farmington man was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of child abuse and domestic violence.

Farmington police responded to a domestic dispute call at about 4 a.m. at the San Juan Apartments, 2614 E. 20th St.

Algar William Horsechief, 35, allegedly left his apartment with his 8-month-old child after an argument with the child's mother.

Horschief was drunk, according to a report from San Juan County Sheriff's Department.

Horschief called someone for a ride to a residence at 11 County Road 6482, according to the report. After about 15 minutes, he began arguing with the people at that residence and left with the child.

According to the report, Horschief's sister tried to get him to leave his child at the residence, but he refused and walked into the hills north of the area.

San Juan County Sheriff's Deputies tracked his shoe prints and called for the department's helicopter to assist in the search.

"We expend a lot of resources because the child was involved," said Brice Current, Administrative Captain with the San Juan Country Sheriff's Department. "It's the fact that he was drunk. Priority No. 1 is preserving life."

Horsechief was arrested at around 6:30 a.m., according to the report. The child was shivering, but was unharmed other than minor scrapes and a soiled diaper.
