FARMINGTON — Scam artists claiming to be Farmington Electric Utility System employees hit a number of local businesses Friday afternoon.

The city's utility director Mike Sims said that the scammers had somehow obtained account information on those businesses.

"(The scammers) were going out and telling them they're behind on their electric bill," Sims said. "They said that if they didn't pay, their electricity would be shut off."

Sims said that at least one business gave the scammers money.

He said that all electric utility customers should contact the utility's customer service line, 505-599-1353, for verification before making payments.
