This year's dance will be May 4 at the San Juan Country Club in Farmington.
Committee member Kristen Cochrane said the committee was looking for ideas for its main fundraising event about six years ago. One member, who was a dance instructor, suggested a dance competition.
Kristen Cochrane's husband and San Juan College's band director, Keith Cochrane, offered the college's big band to play for the competition.
The idea was so successful, the committee has only had to host the fundraiser every other year.
"If you dance, it's a lot of fun," said Kristen Cochrane.
During dinner, the band will play ballad-type music. The music switches to upbeat tunes during the dance competition.
"It's a whole lot of fun to watch the dance," said Michael Bulloch, a committee member.
Bulloch said the winner of the competition receives a trophy to keep for two years until the next winner claims it.
There will also be prizes for second and third places. Kristen Cochrane said these prizes will be selected from the items donated for the silent auction portion of the evening.
The auction includes items ranging from a night at Kokopelli Cave to art creations. One unique item is model airplane flying lessons from a master model airplane pilot.
The fine arts committee will use the money raised from the evening to provide scholarships for art students, to buy art for the college's collection, to host the Young Artist Recital and for other art purposes.
"We support arts in the entire community," said Kristen Cochrane.
