FARMINGTON — The Farmington High and Piedra Vista tennis teams continued their strong play by sweeping their district openers on Friday.

The Lady Scorpions kept up their winning ways, defeating Grants (7-2) and Belen (9-0).

“We were able to start the district season on a positive note,” said FHS girls head coach Pat McGrath.

Allie Linville and Sydney Schumacher each dropped just one total game in their two singles victories.

The pair also teamed up for two victories at No. 3 doubles.

Riley Coleman dominated at No. 5 singles, winning her two matches 6-0, 6-1 and 6-0, 6-2.

Liza Briody-Pavlik also had an easy time at No. 3 singles, winning her opening match 6-1, 6-2 and her second match 6-0, 6-0.

The Scorpion boys didn't lose a match in their opener defeating Grants (9-0) and Belen (8-0).

Chris Hunt lost only two games at No. 1 singles for FHS, beating Chris Molina of Grants 6-0, 6-0 and Matt Becker of Belen 6-2, 6-0.

Hunt also teamed with Nathaniel Pavlik to win a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles.

Pavlik won easily against his opponent from Grants 6-1, 6-0 in No. 2 singles, but was forced to grind out a 6-4, 6-4 win against Andres Salas of Belen.

Matt With won both his matches at No. 3 singles and teamed with Eli Briody-Pavlik for a win a No. 2 doubles.

Briody-Pavlik won a match against No. 4 singles versus Grants, then dropped to No. 5 singles to pick up a win against Belen.

Ned Merrion also won a pair of singles matches for the Scorps.

The PV girls team defeated Belen and Grants 7-2 in each match, while the PV boys won 9-0 against the two schools.

PV and FHS will host Gallup and Miyamura on Tuesday.
