The Lady Broncos had no problem shooting the basketball Friday night in Aztec.
Defending 4A state champion Kirtland Central has made a strong run through the first half of the District 1-4A schedule, finishing 3-0 at the halfway point after running through Aztec 57-22.
“We played pretty good,” said Kirtland Central head coach Kevin Holman. “I was a little nervous coming off the Piedra Vista game about whether or not the girls would come out with the same kind of energy they did against PV, but our energy level was good the whole game.”
The Lady Broncos (8-15, 3-0) took an early advantage, going up 16-6 after one quarter and 35-16 at halftime.
Out of the break, Kirtland quickly jumped out to a 30-point lead,  eventually taking a 52-17 lead late in the third quarter.
Taylor Billey led the Lady Broncos with 14 points. Jennifer Hastings chipped in eight, as did Andrea Marris.
Kirtland will have a week off to prepare for a road contest at Farmington High before facing Piedra Vista again Feb. 19.
“I told the girls the second half of district starts for us next Friday. We have a lead through the first half but, for us to get to state, we have to beat Farmington first and then the following Tuesday we can basically wrap it up by taking care of PV,” Holman said.
Holman said he believes PV will be 3-1 in district coming into the matchup.
