Opening District 1-4A games with a win was no problem for No. 5 Farmington High on Tuesday.
The defending 4A state champion Scorpions (7-4 overall, 1-0 District 1-4A) took care of Aztec (3-8-2, 0-1) on the road, scoring three goals in each half to earn a 6-0 victory.
Senior midfielder Omar Romero scored three goals to lead the Scorps while junior striker Isaac Valencia added two more.
Freshman midfielder Joaquin Gonzalez also got on the scoring sheet for Farmington.
“Any win in district under your belt does great things for a team’s confidence,” said FHS first-year head coach Ryan Atkinson. “Getting that first win in district our of the way allows us to look forward to playing Albuquerque Academy this Saturday.”
Freshman goalkeeper Brandon Staford made 12 saves for Aztec in the match.
Farmington’s game against No. 3 Albuquerque Academy is a good measuring stick for the Scorps, Atkinson said.
“It is definitely a big weekend for us. They are one of the top teams in the state so it will be a test for us to see where we match up,” he said. “If we can get a victory there then we are looking good for the postseason.”
Aztec faces another District 1-4A challenge against Piedra Vista at home Thursday.
