CLOVIS, N.M.—Authorities say a Clovis man is facing new charges in connection with a robbery and fatal beating in January.

Clovis police say an arrest warrant for first-degree murder was issued Friday for 23-year-old Daniel Murrell III.

They say Murrell is accused of inflicting fatal injuries during the Jan. 4 robbery and beating of 61-year-old Joe Garcia as he walked home from a convenience store.

Authorities say Garcia died three days after the beating.

Murrell was being held at the Curry County jail on a $50,000 since his Jan. 13 arrest in the Garcia case and another assault and robbery.

Police say Murrell now is being held without bond on an open count of murder.

They didn't immediately know Friday if Murrell has an attorney yet.
