TURLEY — When Jennifer Arnold arranged the first Wine Glass 5 and 10K Dash at Wines of the San Juan, she expected the race would have a late start.

Arnold wanted the race to start at 9:30 a.m., but, anticipating the tardiness, she assigned a start time of 9:31 a.m.

Since then, the minute the race starts has changed to mark the year. For this year's fourth annual dash, the race will start at 9:34 a.m.

The winery will hold its annual Wine Glass Dash and After Tax Spring Fling on Saturday. The spring fling starts at 1 p.m.

At the end of the dash, each runner who crosses the finish line will receive a glass of wine or root beer, depending on the runner's age.

There will be an awards ceremony following the race. During the awards ceremony, blues band Inside Strait will play.

Later, during the spring fling, Boomtown, a local band that blends funk, soul, blues and rock music, will be debut. The band took its name from Farmington's oil boom.

The spring fling will also include a barbecue.

Proceeds from the race will benefit the Farmington Animal Shelter and the Bloomfield fire safety program, which installs smoke detectors in homes throughout Bloomfield.

Arnold said the winery wanted to help the animal shelter as a way to give back. About a year ago, Wines of the San Juan faced a problem. It was overwhelmed by feral cats, which kept having kittens.

The winery called up a spay and neuter service located in Durango, Colo. A woman brought cages and trapped the cats.

Some of the cats were adopted out to homes, while others were returned to the winery, spayed and neutered so they could no longer have kittens.

"We love animals," Arnold said.

In addition to cats, the winery keeps peacocks, dogs and various other creatures.
