FARMINGTON — A Bloomfield woman was arrested Monday on suspicion of stealing $25,000 from her employer.

Jolanna Carmona, 46, was booked into the San Juan County Adult Detention Center on Monday night. She is charged with a second-degree felony for embezzling about $25,000 from Bloomfield Quick Mart, 506 South Bloomfield Blvd.

Carmona is being held in jail on a $30,000 cash-only bond.

Carmona was the district manager of the Bloomfield Quick Mart. She is accused of stealing money that she should have placed in the convenience store's ATM, said Bloomfield police Detective Chad Herrera.

Beginning in January 2012, Carmona cashed more than $100,000 worth of company checks at the Citizens Bank in Bloomfield. Each of the checks was valued between $6,000 and $8,000.

The cash should have been put in the automated teller machine, but a Quick Mart manager reported that about $25,000 was missing, according to the affidavit for her arrest.

Carmona was the only store employee that could deposit money into the ATM, according to the affidavit.

Police started investigating the business when Quick Mart employees reported a burglary on Feb. 11.

The gas station shares a building with a KFC. The restaurant has surveillance cameras inside the Quick Mart.

Police became suspicious of Carmona when she was filmed tampering with KFC surveillance cameras the night before the store reported a burglary.

During the reported burglary, the ATM was damaged.

"We have our suspicions the burglary was staged to hide the embezzlement, but we don't know for sure," Herrera said.

Carmona was charged with fraud in 2001. She pleaded guilty and received a deferred sentence in 2003, according to a state court website.

In a separate case, Carmona also had to appear in district court in 2007 because she owed money. She was ordered to pay $7,184, and she filed for bankruptcy in April 2009.
