FARMINGTON — Curiosity was a trait that defined Magdalena Wegrzyn's childhood and found ample expression when she turned to journalism in high school.

"I had a lot of questions for everyone," Wegrzyn said.

Wegrzyn, 24, recently took the position of city editor at The Daily Times. She works with reporters throughout the day to ensure the paper is providing in-depth coverage of issues important to readers.

For several years, she was the editor-in-chief of her high-school's newspaper.

She was news editor of the University of Northern Colorado's school paper in Greeley before joining the Longmont Times-Call in Longmont. Both cities are in Colorado.

Wegrzyn worked at the Times-Call for four years as a reporter covering features and news. Her responsibilities expanded to include improving the paper's online presence.

Digital First Media — The Daily Times' and Longmont Times-Call's parent company — emphasizes engaging readers with social media and digital projects.

"Newspapers have to embrace the digital side in order to survive," Wegrzyn said.

She plans to help The Daily Times embrace digital journalism. She said she thinks the newspaper has a lot of opportunities to showcase its work on the Internet.

"Maggie has experience and professional dedication that will help us excel," said Chris Roberts, the paper's managing editor. "Her digital knowledge will help us deliver the news in novel ways through a medium that is rapidly evolving."

Wegrzyn also will write stories — for the Web and for print. She is a member of the editorial board and will help produce local editorials.

Wegrzyn had never set foot in San Juan County before flying to Farmington for her Daily Times interview.

As a longtime Colorado resident, Wegrzyn was used to being surrounded by mountains. She said the bluffs were something different for her.

Although she has only been in Farmington for a few weeks, Wegrzyn said she likes what she sees.

And she appreciates the Daily Times' newsroom culture.

"People look out for each other," she said.
