The San Juan County Fire Department reported that a property owner at County Road 6400 tried burning a grass field with insufficient equipment. The fire got out of control at about 4 p.m. when the wind started picking up, department officials said.
"We continued (the fire) for them so that they didn't have to worry about a fire hazard at the drier time of the year," said Donovan Mack, District 1 Fire Chief for the San Juan County Fire Department.
Fire officials require people to get a burn permit before starting a controlled burn, but they also recommend checking with the fire department on weather conditions before starting the burn.
The family that conducted the burn did have a permit, Mack said.
"They do this every year," he said.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were burned.
