FARMINGTON — Farmington residents should no longer have problems obtaining their tax documents, according to an Internal Revenue Service spokesperson.

The taxpayer assistance center in Farmington is being supported by staff from Albuquerque, said William Brunson, IRS spokesperson for New Mexico, Arizona and Utah.

Throughout January, area residents found that the Farmington office was closed, seemingly at random. Some had traveled long distances to get help with their taxes.

"There was confusion over the signage," Brunson said. "I apologize sincerely."

Office personnel had mistakenly posted signs with inaccurate hours of operation, Brunson said.

There have been increases and changes to staff so that residents can get their tax documents Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., he said. The office will be open on Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

"We recommend reviewing our website for current information on when the center is open," Brunson said. "It's the easiest way for anybody to get answers and forms."

That website is www.irs.gov/uac/Contact-My-Local-Office-in-New-Mexico.

Residents can also find all tax documents at www.irs.gov., he said, or call 1-800-829-1040 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Time, Monday through Friday for assistance.

The Farmington Public Library also has common Federal and New Mexico tax forms available to the public free of charge, according to its website.
