ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—Albuquerque police say the motorist who led officers on a televised high-speed chase was not the man officers thought they were after, but a suspected car thief who found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Officers say they were called to a Blake's Lotaburger Thursday because the manager thought the man suspected of having just robbed a sister store was in his parking lot. When police arrived, the man sped off in an SUV.

Officers gave chase, but he refused to stop, leading police on what ended up being a televised pursuit wrong way down city streets and over medians. After the man surrendered, police say they discovered 31-year-old Daniel Archuleta was not their robber. But he was arrested for driving a stolen vehicle and other charges stemming from the chase.

Archuleta remained in jail Friday. It was unclear if had an attorney.
