Martinez announced Friday that Francis Joseph Mathew will replace Barbara Vigil on the 1st Judicial District Court. Vigil was elected to the state Supreme Court in November.
Mathew has operated his own law practice since 2004, and previously worked for the Santa Fe firm of Jones, Snead, Wertheim and Wentworth.
He received his law degree from the University of Notre Dame.
Mathew must run in a partisan election in 2014 to keep his judgeship. He was among six candidates for the judgeship recommended to the governor by a bipartisan nominating commission.
