SANTA FE (AP) — An independent nominating commission is to screen candidates for a vacant judgeship in northern New Mexico.

The commission meets Thursday in Santa Fe to consider seven attorneys applying for a vacancy created by the retirement of District Judge Michael Vigil.

The panel will recommend nominees for possible appointment by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez.

Among the candidates is Santa Fe lawyer David Thomson, who served as a district judge for several months in 2010 but lost in the Democratic primary that year.

Other applicants are Julia Hosford Barnes, Gary Elion, Sylvia LaMar, Joseph Manges, Linda Martinez-Palmer and Donna Bevacqua-Young, who has worked for Attorney General Gary King as a specialist in the prosecution of drunken driving cases.

The 1st Judicial District covers Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Los Alamos counties.
