FARMINGTON — Farmington police arrested a former San Juan County Adult Detention Center guard for possession of child pornography and for sexually assaulting a teenage family member.

Darin Weeks, 43, was charged with four counts of sexual exploitation of children and criminal sexual contact of a minor, all fourth-degree felonies.

He was taken into custody without incident Wednesday afternoon and was booked at the detention center, where he is being held on a $25,000 bond, Farmington police Sgt. Robert Perez said.

"Through the course of the investigation he admitted to having inappropriate sexual contact with a teenage family member," Perez said.

Weeks was a corrections officer at the jail and was not a supervisor, said Tom Havel, the administrator of the detention center.

Weeks had been employed with the detention center for several years and was no longer working at the detention center at the time of his arrest, Havel said.

Exact dates of his employment at the jail and the date and circumstances of his departure were not available Wednesday evening.

The child pornography was obtained from Weeks' residence, and there was no evidence the illegal materials were ever inside the detention center, Perez said.

It did not appear the child pornography depicted local victims, he said.

Because of Weeks' position at the detention center, police notified his administrators when he was identified as a suspect in the case, Perez said.

Havel said Weeks is being kept in protective custody at the detention center for his own safety.
