Editor,
I live in Albuquerque, but like to keep up with what is going on in other parts of New Mexico. From reading "Local unemployment rate shows potential for improvement" my guess is that the author is right and that it is a false indicator that the economy is getting better. As long as we are over-dependent on coal and oil in this state, I'm pretty confidant that our jobs and the economy will just fluctuate with their demand.
On the other hand, another study I read found that we can create 11,000 new jobs here in New Mexico by investing in wind and solar energy. As one of the states that gets the most sunlight in the U.S., it seems like a no-brainer. A couple of weeks ago I was at the Albuquerque Solar Fiesta where there must have been more than 50 solar start-up companies who were all doing great.
We are only going to get out of this recession in a new clean economy.
Senators Bingaman and Udall should try to get that clean energy job legislation going through the U.S. Senate passed as soon as possible.
