Darren Vaughan is a sports writer/page designer for The Daily Times. Vaughan, 24, from Moab, Utah, joined the newspaper's staff in September 2006 after graduating from Southern Utah University with a B.A. in communication with dual emphases in broadcasting and journalism just three weeks before. He hopes to complete a second bachelor's degree in Spanish in the near future.

He cut his journalistic teeth by spending a year and a half as the sports editor at SUU's student paper, the University Journal, while also serving as a freelance sports writer covering nine rural high schools for The Spectrum in St. George, Utah. His parents may argue that his aspirations were evident long before that, given his reaction in his younger years to seeing Kermit the Frog as a reporter on Sesame Street.

Vaughan is a die-hard sports fan. Favorite teams include the Denver Broncos, Colorado Avalanche, Denver Nuggets and Colorado Rockies, along with the University of Colorado's football team and the University of Denver's hockey team. He recently

has taken a liking to professional indoor lacrosse as well.

His own athletic career never extended past youth league soccer and a year as a junior-varsity tennis player in high school, but he spent three years helping his high school's boys basketball, football, baseball and softball teams so he could still get a varsity letter despite his total lack of any athletic talent whatsoever. He also spent his freshman year at Southern Utah as the football team's equipment manager.

When he is not working, Vaughan can be found either spending time with friends, watching sports on television, or listening to music (favorites include Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Bruce Springsteen and many others).
