After almost 20 years as a licensed cosmetologist in Colorado, where I owned my own styling salon, the editor of my hometown weekly newspaper decided my talents went beyond styling hair. He taught me the basics of journalism while I covered local meetings and wrote a weekly column for the paper. A move to Wyoming took me to the Rawlins Daily Times, where again I was blessed with an editor who took me under his wing and hired me as the Lifestyles editor. I learned how to take photos and how to print them, the basics of newspaper design and was fortunate to cover sports and local government as well as my lifestyles duties. My last move brought me to San Juan County, and I was hired as a general assignment reporter; then editor of Off Hours, managing editor of the Independent Review, a weekly newspaper in Aztec, and assistant
Oliver, the Cat Who Never Stops Talking, lets me live with him in Farmington. He has created a rather nice home for me and has given me my own room and free run of the house, as long as I stay house trained. It is a situation that works for both of us, but I really do think he's got the better deal.
I have many passions in life. My work, naturally, is one of them. Sports — especially NASCAR — rate right up there with a good glass of wine from the Wines of the San Juan. I have a wonderful son and a daughter-in-law, who believe I will never be truly happy until I move to Albuquerque to be near them. I am actively involved in many volunteer efforts and enjoy giving back to the community that has given me so much. The absolute best part of my work, however, is the wonderful and talented young people I am blessed to work with. As a "senior," I find the ideas, the energy and the enthusiasm of young people encourages me to step outside of my comfortable box and try new things. Those great young people are more than professional colleagues, they are dear and treasured friends.
