FARMINGTON — New Mexico State Police on Saturday confirmed the identity of the man shot by Farmington police Friday afternoon.

Michael Chavez, 41, was shot by Farmington police at about 1:30 p.m. Friday.

He was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center and was in fair condition on Saturday, a nurse at the hospital said.

New Mexico State Police Lt. Tim Johnson said Chavez was driving when a Farmington officer pulled him over. Chavez left the vehicle on foot.

The officer who pulled Chavez over and another officer on a motorcycle chased Chavez. The pursuit ended when Chavez was shot near the intersection of Schofield Lane and 15th Street.

Police did not say if Chavez had a weapon or if he threatened an officer when he was shot.

State police are investigating the shooting. The agency declined to release further details about the shooting. They did not say how many officers fired their weapons and how many times Chavez was shot. They also did not release the officers' names.

Farmington police Lt. Taft Tracy said in an email that two officers have been placed on paid administrative leave.

San Juan County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Beth Utley said the office had an arrest warrant for Chavez. Chavez was wanted on suspicion of burglary, she said.

After the shooting, state police obtained a search warrant for the car Chavez was driving. The agency declined to release a copy of the search warrant on Saturday.

As of Saturday evening, Chavez had yet to be charged with a crime, Johnson said.

Johnson said police haven't interviewed the officers involved in the shooting.

Friday's shooting was the third shooting this year that involved a Farmington police officer.

On Jan. 1, Sgt. Shawn Scott shot and killed Mark Chavez, 49, outside of a home on Loma Linda Lane. Officer Jeremy Hill shot and killed Daniel Rey, inside a home on Leighton Avenue, on Jan. 22.

Johnson said he was not sure if Michael Chavez and the man shot on Jan. 1 were related.
