No one was injured and investigators haven't found a motive for the shooting.
At about 2 a.m. the woman and her 14-year-old son were driving south when a dark Chevy Tahoe and a tan passenger car, which seemed to be traveling together, started following the woman's car, Lt. Cory Tanner said.
The woman told investigators she heard several shots fired from one of the cars. Several bullets struck the back of her vehicle, Tanner said. It was not clear how many people shot the woman and her son.
The suspects drove away after the shooting.
The woman who was shot at was a Farmington woman who was on her way to pick up her husband when she was shot at.
“There is no reason to believe she would be a target,” Tanner said. “At this point we are trying to determine if it was a case of mistaken identity or a random act.”
The woman drove to a relative's house who lived nearby after the shooting and called 911.
Deputies were not able to find the car after the shooting was reported, Tanner said.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Det. Candice Montoya through the communications center at 334-6622 or San Juan County Crime Stoppers at 334-TIPS.
