Piedra Vista graduate Dominic Moreno set a Texas Tech baseball record Friday night in his first appearance for the Red Raiders.
In six innings of work against Northern Illinois, Moreno struck out 11 batters to set an opening day starting pitcher strikeout record. Moreno surpassed the previous record of 10, set by AJ Ramos in 2008.
Moreno's 11 strikeouts are the most by a Texas Tech pitcher since Bobby Doran's 16 against Missouri in 2010, according to Texas Tech Associated Director of Athletics and Communications Scott Lacefield.
Texas Tech won the game 8-0 in front of a crowd of 2,459 fans.
Moreno, a transfer from Howard Junior College, allowed only five hits while walking three during his Red Raider debut. He threw 97 pitches.
