Lindsey Benally, 26, fled from a New Mexico State Police officer who tried to pull him over as he was leaving Zia Liquors and Convenience Store at about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sgt. James Rempe said.
The man reached speeds of more than 90 miles per hour as he fled from an officer, Rempe said.
Benally drove into Shiprock to the Bureau of Indian Affairs building where he turned himself in to a state police officer.
Rempe said Navajo police took Benally into custody.
State police will file charges in New Mexico district court for suspicion of DWI, resisting arrest and for numerous traffic violations, Rempe said.
If police review the evidence and find he put other drivers’ lives at risk he could be charged with aggravated fleeing, which is a felony, Rempe said.
“The bottom line, is just pull over,” Rempe said. “If you flee we will do everything we can to catch you.”
