Farmington – Gunshots ripped through the silence of a south Farmington neighborhood Tuesday night.

Farmington Police officers responding to a domestic violence call near 517 Leighton Ave. were faced with an individual holding a weapon, said Police Chief Kyle Westall.

Police said a man in the home had thrown a small child from a bed, was striking a female and was "breaking everything in the house," Sgt. Joshua Laino said a in a press release.

The man confronted a police officer with a "large edge weapon" and was shot by police. He was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center where he died, Laino said.

Police have not yet released the names of the suspect or the officer involved in the shooting.

The officer has been placed on paid administrative leave, Laino said.

Witnesses in the neighborhood claimed hearing between three and six shots around 10:10 p.m.

It was Farmington police's second officer-involved shooting this month.
